AGC Launches New Production Line for FINEO Vacuum Insulating Glass

AGC Glass Europe has officially launched a new state-of-the-art production line for its vacuum insulating glass product, FINEO, at its Lodelinsart facility in Belgium. The expansion marks a significant milestone for the company, with production capacity now quadrupled and lead times reduced by half to just two weeks.

The investment demonstrates AGC’s commitment to scaling innovative glazing technologies for the wider European construction market. With thermal performance reaching Ug values of up to 0.44 W/m²K, FINEO is positioning itself as a high-performance alternative to conventional triple glazing.

A New Generation of Industrial Glass Manufacturing

The newly opened facility is one of the most advanced automated vacuum insulating glass manufacturing plants in the world. According to Stefan Lips, Sales Director Europe for FINEO, the company has rapidly evolved its production capabilities since launching its first pilot line in 2019.

What began as “Generation 1.0” has now advanced to “FINEO 3.0,” with future developments already underway. The new line introduces several technological improvements, including lower-temperature vacuum evacuation processes that significantly reduce production cycles from twenty hours to fifteen hours, with ambitions to lower this further to ten hours.

This increased efficiency allows AGC to:

  • Expand production capabilities
  • Improve product availability
  • Offer more competitive pricing
  • Broaden the range of coatings and glazing variants available

The facility also supports a wide variety of glass formats, from compact specialty applications to large architectural panels measuring up to 1,600 x 3,000 millimeters.

What Makes FINEO Different?

FINEO represents a next-generation approach to insulating glass technology. Instead of relying on multiple panes separated by gas-filled cavities, FINEO uses an ultra-thin vacuum layer measuring just 0.1 millimeters between two panes of glass.

Unlike many competing vacuum glazing products, FINEO eliminates the visible evacuation opening, resulting in cleaner aesthetics and minimal visual disruption.

Key Benefits of FINEO Vacuum Glass

  • Thermal insulation comparable to triple glazing
  • Approximately one-quarter the thickness of triple glazing
  • Around half the weight of traditional triple-glazed units
  • Higher daylight transmission
  • Reduced frame and window profile thickness
  • Lower material consumption and embodied carbon emissions

According to Jerome Goubau, General Manager of FINEO, these characteristics contribute to both lower production-related CO₂ emissions and improved operational energy efficiency over the lifespan of buildings.

Innovative Manufacturing Process

The manufacturing approach behind FINEO differs significantly from conventional insulating glass production.

The process begins with a large “motherboard” glass plate, which is divided into the required pane sections inside a cleanroom environment. The glass is then evacuated and hermetically sealed before final cutting takes place.

This reverse manufacturing process offers several advantages:

  • Full surface utilization without integrated valves
  • Enhanced durability and insulation performance
  • Cleaner visual appearance
  • Long-term maintenance-free operation

Additionally, FINEO uses entirely ceramic materials in its construction. Unlike conventional insulating glass, which combines glass, aluminum, butyl, and polysulphide components, FINEO is fully recyclable and circular, with all materials capable of returning to the glass furnace production cycle.

Addressing Europe’s Renovation Challenge

Europe’s aging building stock presents a major challenge for energy efficiency improvements. Many historic and existing buildings cannot support the weight or thickness of modern triple glazing systems.

This is where FINEO is gaining attention.

Its slim profile and lightweight construction make it especially suitable for:

  • Historic building restoration
  • Window retrofits
  • Energy-efficient renovations
  • New construction projects requiring slim façade designs

The product’s narrow edge seal and flexible shaping capabilities also make it attractive for architects and conservation specialists seeking to preserve original window aesthetics while improving insulation performance.

Sustainability and Environmental Certifications

AGC is positioning FINEO as one of Europe’s most sustainable glass insulation solutions.

Several factors contribute to this claim:

  • Production takes place entirely in Europe
  • Float glass manufacturing, coating, and processing occur locally
  • Reduced transportation emissions
  • Increasing use of recycled cullet materials
  • Electrification of manufacturing processes
  • Growing reliance on renewable energy

Industry-Leading Environmental Credentials

FINEO recently became the first vacuum insulating glass product to receive an externally verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) through INIES.

Its low-carbon variant achieved:

  • 18.9 kg CO₂ equivalent per square meter

The product has also secured certification from the Dutch Nationale Milieu Database (NMD), which is widely used in sustainability assessments across the Netherlands.

Long-term testing further indicates that FINEO maintains its thermal and acoustic performance for more than sixty years, reinforcing its long-term value proposition.

Certified for European Markets

FINEO was the world’s first vacuum insulating glass manufacturer to obtain CE marking for this technology category. It also holds multiple national approvals across Europe, including:

  • Germany’s DIBt certification
  • France’s Avis Technique
  • Netherlands BCRG approval
  • Belgium’s ATG certification

These certifications provide architects, specifiers, and developers with:

  • Simplified compliance processes
  • Greater project certainty
  • Faster approvals
  • Confidence in large-scale supply capabilities

AGC Opens FINEO Access to the Entire Market

With the expanded production line now operational, AGC is removing previous market limitations by making FINEO accessible without minimum order quantities or exclusivity requirements.

The company is also expanding its digital support tools, including the FINEO Configurator, which assists architects, installers, and distributors during planning and specification stages.

AGC’s strategy goes beyond manufacturing alone. The company aims to position FINEO as a comprehensive service and knowledge platform for the entire glazing ecosystem.
